Can You Pass This Month’s Test on Homelessness?
1. Option C is best. More homeless men than homeless women live on the West Side, but homeless women are remarkably “street tough.” They’re often more resourceful than their male counterparts.
2. The best answer is B. West Side Homeless Outreach has found that the ethnic makeup of west L.A. County homeless women is proportionate to the local population. Ethnically, nobody’s more predisposed, and no one’s immune.
3. Response A is best. Homeless women throughout the West Side are remarkably self-protective. They instinctively avoid dangerous people, places and things.
4. Answers A–C are good, not D. Despite severely limited resources, homeless women try to maintain their health and appearance. In our experience, most homeless women’s shoes fit adequately.
5. Option C is best. We’re unaware of hard evidence that determines if men or women spend more time homeless. Our experience suggests that individual differences among west L.A. County homeless people are more important than gender differences. For example, a resourceful woman will generally fare better than a homeless person of either gender who’s not resourceful. Similarly, a homeless man who finds sufficiency in basic items will adapt more effectively to life on the streets than a woman or a man who never settles for second best.
